In the Midwest, racing is definitely considered a seasonal hobby. But if you’re like me (AWD in my case) the itch to get on track (or off-road) doesn’t go away when the snow falls.
Racing doesn’t have to end when the temps get low – below we’ll be going through a few of the premier winter motorsport events in the Midwest, from winter track days to ice racing. Registration links are included below each event.

GRIDLIFE Ice Battle Winter Ice Racing at Stevens Point, WI (OPEN – LIMITED SPOTS)
GRIDLIFE took us by surprise with a last-minute announcement of their “Ice Battle” winter ice racing event at Stevens Point, WI. Registration is open now at the link below!
Autocross-style runs; standing start, flying finish runs. Typically 4 heats; 2 morning and 2 afternoon. Drivers will run 2 heats and be off 2 heats. Best time from the morning “stage” and best time from the afternoon “stage” combined, with a course switch in the middle of the day for two routes in one day. Each driver would typically see 8-10 runs minimum in one event.
Snow tires and/or studs are required based on class. Please see registration link for more details on what’s required!

Road America Winter Autocross Series – Plymouth, WI (OPEN)
We’re starting our list like most snowstorms in the Midwest – in Wisconsin.
Open to drivers of all skill levels (novice to experienced), Road America’s Winter Autocross Series has a little something for everyone to hone their winter driving skills.
Expect a variety of closed-course challenges hosted on Road America’s track facility – speed stop challenge, short autocross, and long autocross.
Fees:
- Winter Series Season Driver Pass: $250, (Includes driver pit pass) (over $300 value)
- Winter Series Daily Driver Pass: $90 Advanced, and $100 Day of Event (Includes driver pit pass)
- Winter Series Pit Pass: $25 Advanced, $35 after the deadline (For crew and spectators)

Iowa Region SCCA Rallycross – Vinton, IA (OPEN)
The winter break is always a little bit shorter for the IA Region SCCA.
After some great rallying in 2021, they’re continuing their Rallycross Series with winter dates in January, February, and March. If you’re into rallying, or you’re in the Iowa region, this is a great opportunity to get on-track and off-road.

Ice Racing With The Wisconsin Autosports Group (OPEN)
This next one you can ONLY do in the winter – so get it while it’s cold.
If you’ve never gone ice racing, it’s definitely a different bag from rallying, and studded tires are definitely encouraged. Hosted at centrally in Wisconsin at Lake Sinissippi, this year’s event will surely draw enthusiasts from around the Midwest.
This event is dependent on ice thickness at the lake, so keep in mind that cancellations (a few days in advance) are a possibility. However, when the lake does freeze all the way solid – there’s not much else like it.

2022 Subaru FL4TFEST Cheese Freeze TSD Rally Wisconsin Dells (OPEN)
This next event is run by great people, for a great cause (charity) – and despite the name, it is open to all enthusiasts (Subaru or otherwise)!
The route features 150 Miles of Time-Speed-Distance rallying exploring some of the best roads and trails in Southwestern Wisconsin. However, be prepared for changing road surfaces & conditions, as well as the unexpected (as with all rallycross). Awards will be awarded after the rally, and registration includes rally numbers, event awards, food, and a limited edition FL4TFEST winter knit hat.
Two event classes are available for registration – competitive rally, and overland sweeper. Rally teams require a minimum of two people (driver and co-driver/navigator) while the overland sweeper class may be run solo. Additional passengers are allowed for an additional fee.
As with all Subaru FL4TFEST events, the event will serve as a fundraiser for charity – this year’s benefactors are the Dane County Humane Society, and American Family Children’s Hospital.

- Overland Sweeper Teams: $50 (1 Person registration included)
- Additional passengers: $25 (includes event and dinner – no hat)

Indianapolis Region SCCA Winter Karting League (SCCA MEMBERS)
If you’re looking for good indoor kart racing in the Indianapolis area, look no further. Hosted by the Indianapolis SCCA (for SCCA members only), and run in time trial format, this Sunday kart league features a 5-event season (every few weeks through March) – but if you’re traveling, you can always just pop in for some networking and an afternoon of good racing!
SCCA membership is required but can be purchased during registration. On-site registration is available only if space allows, max 24 competitors.
